#24 Improved efficiency means a lower carbon footprint. How can this be achieved in the white liquor plant?

#24 Improved efficiency means a lower carbon footprint. How can this be achieved in the white liquor plant?

16m 8s

Improved efficiency leads to less overall energy use which in turn means the lowering of carbon footprint. In the search for improvements in white liquor plant operations ANDRITZ has developed a uniquely simplified and ultimately more efficient technology, LimeDry-H, for improved lime mud feeding.

The LimeDry-H system has seen a number of improvements including the implementing of a hollow central shaft (which means no vacuum tank is required), central shaft axial movement, a better precoat renewal system and improved maintainability. The new system also has the option for the latest in ANDRITZ autonomous white liquor plant solutions.

The improvements to...

#22 What challenges are presented when building one of the largest pulp mills in the world?

#22 What challenges are presented when building one of the largest pulp mills in the world?

13m 31s

Suzano’s Cerrado pulp project in Mato Grosso do Sul state in mid-western Brazil is progressing well and on schedule to start-up in June 2024. The mill is truly a giant and will be the largest single line eucalyptus mill in the world, producing 2.55 million tons per year of pulp.

A project this size obviously involves some challenges, especially with the enormous size of the equipment being supplied. ANDRITZ was contracted to supply all the islands for the Cerrado project including wood processing plant with five chipping lines, the world largest fiberline, the complete pulp drying system, evaporation plant, HERB...

#21 Maintaining excellence: How do you balance old and new at paper mills?

#21 Maintaining excellence: How do you balance old and new at paper mills?

15m 39s

You can witness the remarkable evolution of servicing and maintenance in the automotive industry when you consider how far it has advanced over the past few decades. Breakdowns by the roadside have become increasingly rare, primarily because vehicle manufacturers have established clear service agreements and schedules to ensure that cars remain on the road. This approach to maintenance has now been adopted by pulp and paper mills across Europe.

Less unscheduled stoppages and breakdowns equals better overall efficiency which in turn results in much more effective use of raw materials and energy. This all adds up to improved sustainability at...

#20 What is the importance of sound ESG standards when operating in the pulp and paper industry?

#20 What is the importance of sound ESG standards when operating in the pulp and paper industry?

22m 37s

Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance, or ESG, as it is more commonly known, has rapidly become a defining factor for investors as they look for companies that have sound environmental performance and social and employment standards.

But what does ESG mean when applied to the pulp and paper industry? For producers this means ensuring that sustainable development takes place across the entire supply chain in both environmental and social aspects, from the sourcing of raw material to the recyclability of products and everything in between.

For global suppliers such as ANDRITZ, it means ensuring all its stringent ESG goals are...

#19 What are the possibilities to reduce NOx emissions from recovery boilers?

#19 What are the possibilities to reduce NOx emissions from recovery boilers?

13m 47s

Often described as the “beating heart” of a pulp mill, the recovery boiler has come a long way since it was first invented nearly 100 years ago. Although recovery boilers carry out a virtually irreplaceable function at pulp mills, including the recovering inorganic chemicals, burning organic chemicals and recovering heat for generating energy, there is still work to be done when it comes to emissions - especially NOx emissions.

In general, emissions from the recovery boiler have decreased substantially over the last decades, for instance CO2, dust and sulfur emissions, however in the case of NOx emissions new technology has...

#18 What work is being done to ensure cybersecurity in the pulp and paper industry?

#18 What work is being done to ensure cybersecurity in the pulp and paper industry?

18m 0s

The pulp and paper industry has come a long way when it comes to the digitalization of technology and processes. Now the use of IIoT solutions and data management in production has become virtually the norm. However, with the benefits also come the risks, in this case, the real-world risk of cyber attacks.

Fortunately, there are solutions to this growing challenge. ANDRITZ has been working hard on ensuring its digital solutions have cybersecurity built in by partnering with OTORIO, a specialist cybersecurity technology company focused on operational technologies (OT).

The key focus of the partnership is to build cybersecurity as...

#17 A Circular Economy at Paper Mills: How can circularity be applied to paper machine clothing?

#17 A Circular Economy at Paper Mills: How can circularity be applied to paper machine clothing?

10m 40s

There is no halfway when it comes to circularity at paper mills, you have to go the whole way to complete the circle. This is why ANDRITZ has been closely working with the Montanuniversität Leoben on deep research into making paper machine clothing circular.

Paper machine clothing is mainly made of PET, which has been generally burned after use to generate energy in power plants or used for other purposes such as barriers under roads and pathways or fence edgings. However, these methods of disposing are considered borderline when it comes to the ecology.

Therefore, ANDRITZ has been working closely...
